On les appelle les \u00ab\u00a0g\u00e9antes glac\u00e9es\u00a0\u00bb, par opposition aux g\u00e9antes gazeuses Jupiter et Saturne. Cette appellation est trompeuse\u00a0: leurs int\u00e9rieurs ne sont pas faits de glace au sens classique, mais d&rsquo;un m\u00e9lange complexe et br\u00fblant.<\/p>\n<p>Sous une atmosph\u00e8re riche en hydrog\u00e8ne et en h\u00e9lium, leurs couches profondes contiennent un oc\u00e9an supercritique d&rsquo;eau, d&rsquo;ammoniac et de m\u00e9thane, soumis \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures de plusieurs milliers de degr\u00e9s et \u00e0 des pressions colossales. C&rsquo;est dans ce milieu, et non dans le ciel des plan\u00e8tes, que la pluie de diamants pourrait se produire.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dou_vient_lidee_dune_pluie_de_diamants_sur_Neptune\"><\/span>D&rsquo;o\u00f9 vient l&rsquo;id\u00e9e d&rsquo;une pluie de diamants sur Neptune ?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>L&rsquo;hypoth\u00e8se remonte aux ann\u00e9es 1980. Plusieurs \u00e9quipes de physiciens avaient not\u00e9 que le m\u00e9thane, abondant dans Neptune et Uranus, contient un atome de carbone par mol\u00e9cule. Or, sous tr\u00e8s haute pression, le carbone est connu pour adopter sa forme la plus stable\u00a0: le diamant.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;id\u00e9e \u00e9tait donc la suivante\u00a0: en plongeant vers le centre de la plan\u00e8te, les mol\u00e9cules de m\u00e9thane finiraient \u00e9cras\u00e9es par la pression. Le carbone se lib\u00e9rerait de l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne, se cristalliserait en diamant, puis ces cristaux, plus denses que le milieu environnant, s&rsquo;enfonceraient lentement vers le noyau. Une pluie min\u00e9rale interne, invisible, infinie.<\/p>\n<p>Sur le papier, le sc\u00e9nario tenait. Mais aucune exp\u00e9rience n&rsquo;avait pu le reproduire.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lexperience_de_2017_qui_a_tout_change\"><\/span>L&rsquo;exp\u00e9rience de 2017 qui a tout chang\u00e9<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>En 2017, une \u00e9quipe germano-am\u00e9ricaine men\u00e9e par Dominik Kraus, au laboratoire SLAC de Stanford en Californie, a publi\u00e9 dans la revue <em>Nature Astronomy<\/em> une exp\u00e9rience qui a fait date.<\/p>\n<p>Les chercheurs ont utilis\u00e9 un \u00e9chantillon de polystyr\u00e8ne, un mat\u00e9riau compos\u00e9 de carbone et d&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne, afin de reproduire certains aspects chimiques des compos\u00e9s riches en carbone pr\u00e9sents dans les g\u00e9antes glac\u00e9es. Ils ont employ\u00e9 de puissants lasers pour comprimer brutalement l&rsquo;\u00e9chantillon, puis un laser \u00e0 rayons X pour observer la formation des cristaux au moment m\u00eame o\u00f9 elle se produisait.<\/p>\n<p>Sous une pression de 150 gigapascals (soit 1,5 million de fois la pression atmosph\u00e9rique terrestre) et une temp\u00e9rature de 5 000 kelvins, le carbone s&rsquo;est s\u00e9par\u00e9 de l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne en quelques nanosecondes et s&rsquo;est cristallis\u00e9 en nanocristaux de diamant pur. L&rsquo;exp\u00e9rience ne prouvait pas que l&rsquo;on pouvait observer cette pluie directement sur Neptune, mais elle montrait que le m\u00e9canisme \u00e9tait physiquement possible dans des conditions proches de celles des g\u00e9antes glac\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Combien_de_diamants_pleuvent_sur_Neptune\"><\/span>Combien de diamants pleuvent sur Neptune ?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>D&rsquo;apr\u00e8s les mod\u00e8les th\u00e9oriques, des millions de tonnes de diamants se formeraient en permanence \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur de Neptune et d&rsquo;Uranus. Certaines simulations sugg\u00e8rent m\u00eame que les cristaux pourraient atteindre, dans certaines r\u00e9gions et sur de longues p\u00e9riodes, des tailles de l&rsquo;ordre du centim\u00e8tre.<\/p>\n<p>Pourquoi ne les voit-on pas\u00a0? Parce qu&rsquo;ils ne sortent jamais. Plus denses que l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne et l&rsquo;h\u00e9lium qui les entourent, ils plongent vers le centre de la plan\u00e8te, o\u00f9 ils s&rsquo;accumuleraient autour du noyau rocheux. Personne ne pourra jamais les ramasser\u00a0: la pression \u00e0 ces profondeurs broierait instantan\u00e9ment n&rsquo;importe quelle sonde envoy\u00e9e par l&rsquo;humanit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pourquoi_raconter_cette_histoire_aux_enfants\"><\/span>Pourquoi raconter cette histoire aux enfants ?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Pour un enfant, la pluie de diamants de Neptune est une porte d&rsquo;entr\u00e9e vers ce que les sciences plan\u00e9taires ont de plus fascinant\u00a0: l&rsquo;id\u00e9e que la mati\u00e8re, sous des conditions extr\u00eames, peut se comporter d&rsquo;une mani\u00e8re totalement \u00e9trang\u00e8re \u00e0 notre quotidien. L&rsquo;eau peut devenir solide \u00e0 tr\u00e8s haute temp\u00e9rature. Le carbone peut tomber en cristaux.
