Son directeur de th\u00e8se a eu le Nobel."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chaque nuit de l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 et de l&rsquo;automne 1967, Jocelyn Bell d\u00e9roule jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 <strong>29 m\u00e8tres de bandes de papier<\/strong> couvertes de signaux radio. C&rsquo;est son travail de doctorante : analyser \u00e0 la main les donn\u00e9es du t\u00e9lescope radio qu&rsquo;elle a pass\u00e9 deux ans \u00e0 construire, chercher les quasars qui scintillent dans l&rsquo;espace lointain, noter les interf\u00e9rences parasites, les classer, les \u00e9liminer.<\/p>\n<p>Un jour d&rsquo;<strong>ao\u00fbt 1967<\/strong>, elle rep\u00e8re quelque chose. Un signal qui n&rsquo;est ni un quasar ni une interf\u00e9rence connue. \u00c0 peine <strong>2,5 centim\u00e8tres<\/strong> sur 120 m\u00e8tres de bande. Elle le note. Elle surveille. Le signal revient. Elle en parle \u00e0 son directeur de th\u00e8se, Antony Hewish. Il lui dit que c&rsquo;est probablement une interf\u00e9rence. Qu&rsquo;elle a mal c\u00e2bl\u00e9 le t\u00e9lescope.<\/p>\n<p>Elle insiste. Le <strong>28 novembre 1967<\/strong>, le signal revient clairement : une pulsation r\u00e9guli\u00e8re toutes les <strong>1,337 secondes<\/strong>, d&rsquo;une pr\u00e9cision d&rsquo;une part sur un million. Rien dans l&rsquo;univers connu ne peut produire quelque chose d&rsquo;aussi r\u00e9gulier. Ils baptisent la source <em>LGM-1<\/em>, pour <em>Little Green Man 1<\/em>. Ils cherchent trois autres sources similaires. Ils en trouvent trois. Ce ne sont pas des extraterrestres : ce sont des <strong>\u00e9toiles \u00e0 neutrons en rotation rapide<\/strong>, des objets dont personne n&rsquo;avait encore observ\u00e9 la signature radio. On les appellera des <strong>pulsars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>En <strong>1974<\/strong>, le prix Nobel de physique &#8211; le premier jamais attribu\u00e9 pour une d\u00e9couverte en astronomie &#8211; est accord\u00e9 \u00e0 <strong>Antony Hewish<\/strong> et \u00e0 Martin Ryle. Son p\u00e8re est architecte. Il a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 la conception du <strong>plan\u00e9tarium d&rsquo;Armagh<\/strong>, tout proche de chez eux. Il y emm\u00e8ne sa fille. Il lui pr\u00eate ses livres d&rsquo;astronomie. L&rsquo;un d&rsquo;eux, <em>Frontiers of Astronomy<\/em> de Fred Hoyle, la d\u00e9cide : elle sera astronome.<\/p>\n<p>En Irlande du Nord, dans les ann\u00e9es 1950, les filles sont cens\u00e9es \u00e9tudier la cuisine et les travaux d&rsquo;aiguille. Les mati\u00e8res scientifiques sont r\u00e9serv\u00e9es aux gar\u00e7ons. Les parents de Jocelyn contestent cette r\u00e8gle et l&rsquo;envoient dans une \u00e9cole o\u00f9 elle peut \u00e9tudier la physique. Elle obtient son <strong>bachelor \u00e0 l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 de Glasgow<\/strong> en 1965, puis entre \u00e0 <strong>Cambridge<\/strong> pour y faire son doctorat en radioastronomie sous la direction d&rsquo;<strong>Antony Hewish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Deux_ans_a_construire_un_telescope_puis_une_anomalie\"><\/span>Deux ans \u00e0 construire un t\u00e9lescope, puis une anomalie<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ses deux premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es \u00e0 Cambridge, Jocelyn Bell les passe \u00e0 construire de ses mains, avec cinq autres personnes, un <strong>r\u00e9seau de scintillation interplan\u00e9taire<\/strong> de plusieurs hectares &#8211; un radiot\u00e9lescope con\u00e7u pour observer les quasars. C&rsquo;est elle qui op\u00e8re ensuite l&rsquo;instrument au quotidien. C&rsquo;est elle qui analyse les bandes de donn\u00e9es, des centaines de m\u00e8tres par semaine, \u00e0 la main.<\/p>\n<p>Quand elle rep\u00e8re le signal anormal en ao\u00fbt 1967, Hewish est sceptique. Elle persiste. Elle d\u00e9veloppe une m\u00e9thode pour enregistrer \u00e0 grande vitesse le signal au moment pr\u00e9cis o\u00f9 la source traverse le champ du t\u00e9lescope. Le <strong>28 novembre 1967<\/strong>, elle a ses premi\u00e8res donn\u00e9es nettes. Elle essaie d&rsquo;appeler Hewish. Une fois qu&rsquo;il voit les impulsions de ses propres yeux, il comprend. Une nouvelle direction de recherche commence.<\/p>\n<p>Ils \u00e9liminent m\u00e9thodiquement toutes les explications possibles : interf\u00e9rence terrestre, satellite, r\u00e9flexion parasite. Jocelyn Bell trouve trois autres sources du m\u00eame type dans ses bandes d\u00e9j\u00e0 analys\u00e9es. L&rsquo;article annon\u00e7ant la d\u00e9couverte est publi\u00e9 dans <em>Nature<\/em> le <strong>24 f\u00e9vrier 1968<\/strong>, sign\u00e9 par cinq auteurs : <strong>Hewish en premier, Bell en deuxi\u00e8me<\/strong>, puis trois autres membres de l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Le_Nobel_sept_ans_plus_tard\"><\/span>Le Nobel, sept ans plus tard<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>En <strong>1974<\/strong>, le Nobel de physique r\u00e9compense la d\u00e9couverte des pulsars et les travaux en radioastronomie. Il va \u00e0 Hewish et \u00e0 Martin Ryle, le directeur du groupe de radioastronomie de Cambridge. Jocelyn Bell, qui a entre-temps termin\u00e9 sa th\u00e8se et travaille ailleurs, apprend la nouvelle dans la presse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fred Hoyle<\/strong>, l&rsquo;un des astrophysiciens les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres de l&rsquo;\u00e9poque &#8211; l&rsquo;auteur du livre qui avait donn\u00e9 \u00e0 Bell l&rsquo;envie de faire de l&rsquo;astronomie &#8211; critique vivement le comit\u00e9 Nobel. Il accuse Hewish d&rsquo;avoir pris le cr\u00e9dit d&rsquo;une d\u00e9couverte faite par son \u00e9tudiante.<\/p>\n<p>Bell Burnell elle-m\u00eame adopte une position plus nuanc\u00e9e. En <strong>1977<\/strong>, elle d\u00e9clare publiquement qu&rsquo;elle ne pense pas que son exclusion soit injuste compte tenu de son statut d&rsquo;\u00e9tudiante \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9poque, et que les conflits de priorit\u00e9 entre directeur et doctorant sont \u00ab\u00a0toujours difficiles \u00e0 trancher.\u00a0\u00bb Plus r\u00e9cemment, elle a dit qu&rsquo;elle \u00e9tait \u00ab\u00a0vraiment fi\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb que ce soient ses \u00e9toiles qui aient convaincu le comit\u00e9 Nobel qu&rsquo;il y avait de la bonne physique en astrophysique &#8211; et que c&rsquo;\u00e9tait l\u00e0 une forme de reconnaissance.<\/p>\n<p>Elle ne re\u00e7oit aucune reconnaissance institutionnelle pour la d\u00e9couverte des pulsars avant <strong>1978<\/strong>. Puis les honneurs arrivent progressivement, sur des d\u00e9cennies.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"La_suite_une_carriere_et_3_millions_donnes\"><\/span>La suite : une carri\u00e8re, et 3 millions donn\u00e9s<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s Cambridge, Jocelyn Bell Burnell construit une carri\u00e8re scientifique et institutionnelle solide, dans une dizaine d&rsquo;\u00e9tablissements diff\u00e9rents, en jonglant pendant des ann\u00e9es avec un poste \u00e0 temps partiel et les contraintes familiales d&rsquo;un mari qui d\u00e9m\u00e9nage souvent et d&rsquo;un fils diab\u00e9tique.<\/p>\n<p>Elle devient pr\u00e9sidente de la <strong>Royal Astronomical Society<\/strong> (2002-2004), de l&rsquo;<strong>Institute of Physics<\/strong> (2008-2010), et de la <strong>Royal Society of Edinburgh<\/strong> (2014) &#8211; premi\u00e8re femme \u00e0 ce poste. Elle est nomm\u00e9e <strong>Dame<\/strong> de l&rsquo;Empire britannique en 2007. Elle re\u00e7oit la <strong>m\u00e9daille Copley<\/strong> de la Royal Society en 2021, l&rsquo;une des plus hautes distinctions scientifiques britanniques.<\/p>\n<p>En <strong>2018<\/strong>, le <strong>Breakthrough Prize en physique fondamentale<\/strong> lui est d\u00e9cern\u00e9 pour \u00ab\u00a0ses contributions fondamentales \u00e0 la d\u00e9couverte des pulsars et une vie enti\u00e8re de leadership inspirant dans la communaut\u00e9 scientifique.\u00a0\u00bb Le prix est de <strong>3 millions de dollars<\/strong>. Elle reverse l&rsquo;int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 de la somme pour cr\u00e9er un fonds de bourses destin\u00e9 aux <strong>\u00e9tudiants sous-repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s<\/strong> &#8211; femmes, minorit\u00e9s, r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s &#8211; souhaitant faire de la recherche en physique.<\/p>\n<p>Quand on lui demande pourquoi, elle r\u00e9pond qu&rsquo;elle a b\u00e9n\u00e9fici\u00e9 toute sa vie de la chance d&rsquo;avoir des parents qui croyaient en l&rsquo;\u00e9ducation des filles, \u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 ce n&rsquo;\u00e9tait pas acquis.
