Cet animal a exist\u00e9 : il s\u2019appelait <em>Nimbadon lavarackorum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>D\u00e9couvert dans les d\u00e9p\u00f4ts fossilif\u00e8res exceptionnels de Riversleigh, dans le nord-ouest du Queensland, Nimbadon est aujourd\u2019hui consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme l\u2019un des marsupiaux les mieux conserv\u00e9s du Mioc\u00e8ne australien. Sa d\u00e9couverte a profond\u00e9ment chang\u00e9 notre compr\u00e9hension de l\u2019\u00e9cologie des grands marsupiaux disparus. Longtemps class\u00e9 parmi les herbivores terrestres, il est d\u00e9sormais reconnu comme l\u2019un des plus grands mammif\u00e8res arboricoles que l\u2019Australie ait jamais connus.<\/p>\n<p><img Le squelette montre des hum\u00e9rus robustes, un syst\u00e8me musculaire fortement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 au niveau de la ceinture scapulaire et une mobilit\u00e9 du bras comparable \u00e0 celle observ\u00e9e chez les koalas. La t\u00eate de l\u2019hum\u00e9rus, large et arrondie, t\u00e9moigne d\u2019une grande amplitude au niveau de l\u2019\u00e9paule, id\u00e9ale pour embrasser les troncs et se hisser \u00e0 la verticale.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Le coude, quant \u00e0 lui, \u00e9tait capable d\u2019une rotation importante. Cela permettait de tourner la paume vers l\u2019int\u00e9rieur ou l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur, une capacit\u00e9 essentielle pour agripper des surfaces irr\u00e9guli\u00e8res comme les \u00e9corces ou les branches. Cette combinaison de puissance et de souplesse est l\u2019un des marqueurs les plus nets d\u2019un mode de vie arboricole.<\/p>\n<p>Les mains de Nimbadon \u00e9taient proportionnellement grandes, avec des doigts allong\u00e9s et surtout une configuration semi-opposable du pouce. Les phalanges terminales \u00e9taient dot\u00e9es de griffes longues, recourb\u00e9es et comprim\u00e9es lat\u00e9ralement, capables de p\u00e9n\u00e9trer profond\u00e9ment dans l\u2019\u00e9corce. Le hallux, d\u00e9pourvu de griffe mais allong\u00e9 et orient\u00e9 vers l\u2019int\u00e9rieur, agissait comme un vrai doigt opposable. Le reste du pied montrait un grand d\u00e9veloppement des tub\u00e9rosit\u00e9s plantaires et une structure articulaire permettant flexion, torsion et inversion. Cette flexibilit\u00e9 est essentielle pour stabiliser le corps sur des surfaces arrondies, comme les branches.<\/p>\n<p>Plusieurs articulations du tarse pr\u00e9sentent une morphologie typique des grimpeurs : surfaces concavo-convexes pour absorber les pressions lat\u00e9rales, t\u00eate de l\u2019astragalus adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 la rotation et contacts limit\u00e9s entre certains os pour faciliter les mouvements. Dans les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes modernes, tr\u00e8s peu d\u2019animaux atteignent un tel gabarit tout en vivant dans les arbres. Cette caract\u00e9ristique fait de Nimbadon l\u2019un des plus grands grimpeurs herbivores de tous les temps.<\/p>\n<p>Son poids n\u2019emp\u00eachait pas une \u00e9tonnante agilit\u00e9. L\u2019anatomie des membres, en particulier les doigts longs, les larges surfaces d\u2019insertion musculaire et les griffes profondes, indique que Nimbadon pouvait se d\u00e9placer avec une grande pr\u00e9cision.
